The well behind the name
The FUKUI symbol is a geometric well — four intersecting lines forming an open square. Fukui (福井) means “fortunate well”, and the character 井, well, has for centuries been written as exactly this grid of crossing lines. The logo doesn't illustrate the name; it reproduces its source.
The well is one of the oldest symbols of community: a point around which people gather, a source they return to. The open, lattice-like structure of the mark expresses that — nothing here is closed off or hidden. The lines you see running through this page are the same four lines.
